About Us

The Bread and Roses at the Chapel is partnership between the National Union of Journalists and the Workers Beer Company which is owned by the Battersea and Wandsworth Trade Union Council. WBC is one of the main operators of festival bars in both the UK and Ireland.

The Bread and Roses first began at our sister venue in Clapham, where we have built up a following of locals, tourists and theatre goers alike who come together to enjoy our food and drink offering in a friendly, relaxed environment.

"The Bread & Roses is named in recognition of the struggle of workers around the globe for a better quality of life. The name is taken from a song written during a strike of women textile workers in Lawrence Massachusetts, USA in 1912. 27.000 women went out onto the streets and marched for eleven weeks to improve their working conditions. Their banners called for bread and roses. A poet among them, James Oppenheim, wrote the lyrics to what became the trademark song for women trade unionists around the world. It is still sung by delegates to conclude the ICTU Women's Conference"

The purpose built venue is situated on the ground floor of the National Union of Journalists HQ in the heart of vibrant Kings Cross

The Workers Beer Company currently owns the Bread and Roses pub in Clapham which offers a unique combination of comedy, live music and cutting edge fringe theatre, an offering that we are keen to replicate at the Chapel.

The Bread and Roses at the Chapel will offer residencies to various up and coming food vendors to ensure our customers always have something new to look forward to pop in and try.
